FRIENDLY CITY RELATIONSHIP
WILLLOUGHBY CITY COUNCIL AND JINNIU DISTRICT, CHENGDU, CHINA
Response to the 2008 Eartrhquakes in China
The project submitted for consideration is primarily characterised by compassion and goodwill between the cities of Jinniu and Willoughby, and their community members. It relates to the correspondence that took place between the two cities following the 2008 earthquakes.
Upon hearing of the 2008 earthquake in China and learning of its impact on Jinniu, Willoughby Council immediately implemented its Humanitarian Response Policy (2006). The Global Friendship Committee, under the guidance of Council, is the key body to action strategies enacted under this policy. The Humanitarian Policy aims to meet the following objectives;
To assist disaster affected areas in the recovery process not only for the short and medium terms but also to initiate longer term responses that work towards sustaining communities into the future.
To give priority for support to communities that are particularly vulnerable i.e. due to the extreme impact of the disaster or an inability to access adequate resources to aid in the recovery process.
To provide opportunities for the Willoughby community to work with Council in assisting disaster affected areas.
To protect human life during and after a humanitarian crisis, by reducing vulnerabilities and strengthening local communities.
